I wounder when #ALDI stops branding their #Toast as "#AMERICAN" because it's definitely not #USian / #USA - Style, as it's way too healthy and doesn't have #HighFructoseCornSyrup or #YellowNumber5 in it!
Mind you #Germany has actual #bread #culture and that #AldiToast is considered "bare minimum slop" and not even proper bread by anyone with taste.
@kkarhan
True,
the only really edible and healthy bread at Aldi is the freshly baked walnut bread.
@kkarhan that works in Germany for the same reason that some people buy David Hasselhoff records and Budweiser here and stay up for the Super Bowl - there is, for some, an indelible link between “American” and “Cool”, no matter how crappy the actual product is. Sure, it’s not Kreuzberg or St Pauli residents, but it’s widespread and often lacks the knowledge or the taste to differentiate between real and fake, good and bad. It’s like being a CDU/CSU voter.
@kkarhan the sad thing is, the genuinely good things about the US often evade the consciousness of large parts of Europe. We’re so caught up in telling ourselves we’re better whilst lapping up America’s own self destructive media. We love to laugh at American idiocy - voting for Trump, defending gun rights and lacking universal healthcare - that we miss our own idiocy and gullibility in the face of the right myths. They’re different myths, sure, but every bit as effective.
